Mike Pellegrino, President
Before founding Pellegrino & Associates, Mike had a successful career as both a software engineer and as a finance officer for a leading Indiana technology firm.
He has worked internationally for clients ranging from FORTUNE 500 companies to municipal governments, on projects as diverse as consumer products and military communication systems.
Mike has particular experience in the identification and valuation of application software embedded in capital equipment. The following is a sample list of the types of equipment that Mike has evaluated for software content: telephone systems, networking switches, egg sorting equipment, DVD manufacturing equipment, medical imaging equipment, gasoline pumps, point-of-sale terminals, printing machines, packaging sorters, automated vehicle systems, automated storage and retrieval systems, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, mainframe computers, large scale storage systems, and CNC equipment.
Mike also has extensive experience valuing patents and other forms of intellectual property, business, human capital, training benefits, facility moves, capital purchase decisions, workforce restructurings, business process outsourcing, efficiency improvements, process restructuring, economic opportunity costs, and economic damages from copyright infringement and non-compete violations.
Mike has completed both the 15-hour and 7-hour update USPAP training programs, is current with all USPAP training, has passed all required USPAP exams, and is an associate member with the American Society of Appraisers. He has also completed numerous ICLEF and NBI seminars on property tax issues, he has counseled and testified before legislators about software valuation issues, and he was instrumental in helping to change two Indiana laws regarding the valuation of embedded application software for personal property tax reporting purposes and the taxation of patent-derived income. In addition, Mr. Pellegrino is a regular speaker on the tax effects of embedded application software and intellectual property and intangible valuation.
Clients have used Mike's valuations for internal capital budgeting and planning purposes, for property tax reporting purposes, for quantifying economic damages to support litigation, for raising investment capital, and for economic feasibility analysis.
He graduated from the Indiana Institute of Technology summa cum laude with a BS in computer science, earned an MBA from Ball State University, went back to school a third time for accounting, and attended the Center for Creative Leadership's flagship Leadership Development Program.
Mike serves on the board of the Indiana Venture Club, and Pathways, a not-for-profit organization that helps runaway teens. Mike is a former board member of Techpoint, the Techpoint PAC, and Early Childhood Alliance (Executive Secretary)
Mike resides in Indianapolis, Indiana. He enjoys playing both electric and acoustic guitar, fast recreational bicycling, sailing, self-improvement, and international travel
R. Alan Brink, Director of Sales & Marketing
As Director of Sales & Marketing, Alan brings to Pellegrino & Associates a wide range of knowledge and experience relating to intellectual property, early stage companies, a variety of asset valuations, technology transfers, and tax law. Alan has owned and operated a variety of businesses and his experiences have provided him with an understanding of the financial and psychological challenges faced by business owners and entrepreneurs.
As owner and managing partner of a successful CPA and advisory firm, he consulted with businesses ranging from local family-owned operations to multinational manufacturers. Areas of consultation included obtaining early stage and expansion capital, business and profit planning, and sales and acquisitions. His thorough understanding of tax law has been displayed through the representation of business clients in front of federal, state, and local tax authorities. He developed the firm's business valuation department and has successfully defended a vast array of valuations in court.
Alan founded a manufacturing company which provides automatic leveling and stabilization solutions to an international market. While serving as President and CEO, Alan supervised the development, patent protection, and commercialization of the company's cornerstone product line. Under his leadership, the company traversed the maze from start-up through early stage and is now poised for market dominance.
Alan also founded a consulting firm dedicated to helping inventors turn ideas into profit. In this role, Alan guided entrepreneurs through all phases of the process, including market research, prototype, product development, obtaining patents, determining distribution channels, and licensing of intellectual property. Patent valuations, provided by the firm, were instrumental in obtaining investment capital for its clients.
Alan graduated from Purdue University with a BS in Pharmacy. After two years in the Pharmacy profession, he went back to school and earned an MBA and MS in Accounting from DePaul University. Alan became a CPA shortly after graduation from DePaul.
Ryan Brewer, Principal Valuation Analyst
Ryan Brewer is a principal valuation analyst at Pellegrino & Associates, LLC. He has dual bachelor of science degrees in engineering and environmental health. He has an MBA and is a Ph.D. candidate in sports finance, with a minor in strategy and quantitative methods. Mr. Brewer provides valuation consulting services and intangible asset appraisals for tax and investment purposes and he specializes in valuation and appraisals for early-stage companies and intellectual property. He is also an adjunct professor of finance at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana.
As an engineering professional, Mr. Brewer gained considerable experience in the arena of environment, health, and safety management. He served as liaison with government agencies, the press, and labor unions in matters such as hazardous waste "cradle-to-grave" disposal, occupational hazards exposure, site remediation, and other health concerns. Mr. Brewer is a master certified hazardous materials manager, designated from the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management, Rockville, Maryland.
As a valuation professional, Mr. Brewer has valued a variety of assets and equities, including: intellectual properties (patents, trademarks, trade secrets, brands, workforce, etc.), other goodwill and intangible assets, land holdings, stock options, high technology companies, early-stage technology companies, professional practices, environmental liabilities, manufacturing companies, executive compensation, nonprofit organizations, construction companies, and healthcare firms among others. He has written over forty full-length valuation reports, and dozens of corporate policies and procedures. Mr. Brewer has conducted project valuations, market analyses, financial analyses, solvency analyses, and valuation assignments. He has engaged in assignments for determination of economic damages, business acquisition, stock sales, estate & gift valuation, litigation support, and source funding and has conducted analyses and prepared demonstratives for use in federal and Indiana state courts in antitrust economics cases and intellectual property cases. In addition, he has testified as an economic expert in the federal court system and the Indiana state court system.

Paul Farthing, Senior Valuation Analyst
Paul Farthing is a senior valuation analyst at Pellegrino & Associates. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in computer information systems with a minor in economics. During his undergraduate study, Mr. Farthing received the Purdue University School of Science "A" Student Award on multiple occasions for exemplary performance in computer science coursework. He has an MBA with a concentration in entrepreneurship and has placed top three finishes in business plan competitions.
As a software development professional, Mr. Farthing has served as a computer consultant and has experience in the following computer languages and technologies: C, C++, Visual Basic.NET, ASP.NET, SQL, relational database design, web and graphics design, and data communications and networking. He has assumed roles of increasing responsibility at a mobile phone software company, serving in various capacities ranging from market research, domain administration and brokerage, and intellectual property analysis.
As an intellectual property professional, Mr. Farthing gained considerable experience in the arena of international and domestic patent, trademark, and domain name prosecution. Mr. Farthing has experience in patent search for relevant prior art, drafting patent applications, prosecution of patent and trademark applications, and trademark and domain name enforcement.
Mr. Farthing provides valuation consulting services and intangible asset appraisals for a variety of purposes. He specializes in the identification and valuation application software embedded in capital equipment and appraisals for early-stage companies and intellectual property. Mr. Farthing conducts project valuations, market analyses, financial analyses for a variety of valuation assignments.
Nadir Husain, Senior Valuation Analyst
Nadir Husain is a senior valuation analyst at Pellegrino & Associates, LLC. Mr. Husain has a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology, a master of science degree in engineering from Texas A&M University, and a master's degree in business administration from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, with a concentration in finance.
His research in mechanical engineering yielded two ASME publications in 1999 and 2000. Mr. Husain provides valuation consulting services and intangible asset appraisals for tax and investment purposes, and he specializes in valuation and appraisals for early-stage companies and intellectual property.
As an engineering professional, Mr. Husain gained considerable experience designing mechanical systems, particularly in the chemical processing and heating and cooling industry. Mr. Husain has designed and implemented structural and piping projects for plant processing equipment, and his designs improved the yields of one plant by 15%. Later in his career, he led the design and launch of various product lines for commercial and residential HVAC systems. Most recently, he has been involved in the advanced development of early-stage concept technologies for use in HVAC products.
As a valuation professional, Mr. Husain has valued a variety of assets, including intellectual properties (patents, trademarks, trade secrets, brands, etc.) and early-stage technology companies with technologies as diverse as waste-to-energy combustion systems to cancer vaccines.
Heather Thomas, Marketing Analyst
Heather Thomas specializes in market research for valuation projects. A wizard of data research methods, Heather's focus is to acquire primary and secondary research for the valuation analysts to integrate into final value opinions. An active writer, Heather handles the production and copy editing for all of Pellegrino & Associates' voluminous valuation reports. She also manages work products, client relations, and internal marketing efforts.
Heather holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Indiana University and she is certified as an editor by Ball State University. During her editing career, she reviewed hundreds of peer-reviewed and professor papers for publication. Heather resides in Greenfield, Indiana, enjoys reading, writing, watching movies, assisting her spouse with their photography business, and is an active member of the vocal team in her church.
